Importance Of Safety In Child Care 

Safety in a child care is extremely important because educators has to be very protective of the children's health, well-being, and development. The children in the care child centre depend on educators to keep them safe, they are putting their trust in the educators hands. They have to prevent injuries and accidents, protect the children's health, support their emotions, build trust with the children's and their parents, and prepare for emergencies. Younger children are very curious and like to explore their surroundings without understanding that sometimes it can be risky for them to explore.

CCEYA & Safety Support for Preschoolers (2.5 to 4 years)

The Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA, 2014) is Ontario legislation that sets out standards for the health, safety, and well-being of children in licensed childcare programs, including preschools.By regulating staffing, physical environments, emergency preparedness, and monitoring, the CCEYA provides a comprehensive framework that ensures preschoolers are safe, healthy, and supported in licensed childcare settings.

Accident Report Form

An Accident Report is a form completed whenever a child is injured while in the care of the childcare centre. It records details of the injury and any first aid or actions taken by staff.

Requirements For Accident Form:

 

  • Child’s name

  • Date and time of the accident

  • Location of the accident

  • Description of what happened

  • Nature and extent of the injury

  • First aid or response provided

  • Name of the staff who completed the form

  • Parent notification details

 

The purpose for an accident form is document what happened, how staff responded, and to let parents know what occurred and what actions were taken. This will help the child care centre analyze injury patterns, improve safety practices, and communicate transparently with families.

Daily Written Record / Incident Record

A Daily Written Record is a log maintained each day that includes a summary of any incident that affects the health, safety, or well‑being of children and staff—whether or not it resulted in an injury.This is separate from the accident reports but complementary to, specific accident reports.

Requirements For Incident Form:

  • Any incident affecting health, safety, or well‑being of children or staff

  • Including accidents, serious events, and other significant occurrences

  • Fire drills, evacuations, and emergency procedures should also be noted

  • If nothing notable occurred, the record should still state that the day was uneventful 

The purpose for an incident form is to track every incident that could affect safety so that the centre supervisors and other staff that are working can maintain continuity of care and prevent future issues. This can also help when it's time to be reviewed during inspections and helps identify trends that may require safety changes.
